Executive Team

Jim Cotton | CEO, Founder and Board Member

Dr. James Cotton holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and has over 25 years of experience in thermal system design and research. He is a Professor at McMaster University and is a leading expert in the emerging field of energy harvesting and storage, where his research focuses on developing, modeling and experimentally validating novel devices to advance efficient thermal management solutions and combined heat and power systems, which include vehicle and commercial/industrial applications. Prior to becoming a professor, Dr. Cotton spent seven years in industry working for Dana Corp., where he was the supervisor of the Heat Transfer Research team and provided research and development leadership by determining vision, strategy and goals for heat transfer related activities for the Division.  He has been involved in over $54M in research as a co-applicant, of which he was the Principle Investigator on projects exceeding $13.5M since joining McMaster in 2007.  Dr. Cotton is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Jeff Girard | COO, Founder and Board Member

Jeffrey Girard holds a MASc in Mechanical Engineering and has over 10 years of experience in heat recovery and thermal system design and implementation. He is also an active member of the CSA Subcommittee for Gas Food Service Equipment responsible for ANSI Z83.11/CSA 1.8 safety standard, which covers gas-fired cooking appliances used with the technology. Being heavily involved in the technology’s development, his role within Harvest Systems is focused on operations, commercial deployment and regulatory accreditation.

Kasia Malz | Chief Business Development Officer

Kasia brings over 15 years of diverse financial and business leadership experience working in start-up and high-growth environments.  She’s supported pioneers in innovation and sustainability as an executive and board member, working with companies including Next Hydrogen Solutions, Nuclear Promise X, Green Circle Ideas, Profound Impact, and the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy at McMaster University.  Previously, she was also CFO of Titanium Transportation Group, which she took public and grew from $40 million to $200 million in revenue but has since taken two other companies public.  Kasia has her CPA, Chartered Accountant designation and is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the state of Illinois.  She holds a Masters of Accounting and an Honours Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo.

Gerard Campeau | Founder and Board Member

Gerard Campeau is an expert in the fields of energy storage, thermoelectric-generation design, HOD (Hydrogen on demand) using benign elemental materials, battery, Solid state DC Generation, reactive chemistry, Capture Carbon Dissociation Technologies and product conception-manufacturing, and sales.  He has 32 years of development and prototype experience in all the above fields, including 4 patents and 4 patents pending. Gerard is a founder and participant in 4 companies.



Dr. Joseph Paradi

Dr. Paradi founded and took public a “Time Sharing firm”, which he sold and then joined the University of Toronto as a full-time Professor and researcher. At the University he founded several educational units focusing on entrepreneurship and small business management. Dr. Paradi has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto.

Mr. Shawn Clarke

Shawn Clarke is the Chief Operating Officer of Versa Bank, where he also held roles as CFO and Chief Risk Officer. Prior to that, he was COO of Discovery Air and a Senior Research Engineer at McMaster University. He has a Master of Engineering, specializing in Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Goran Calic

Goran Calic is the Michael Lee‐Chin & Family Chair Professor in Strategic Business Studies and an Associate Professor of Strategic Management at McMaster University. Goran currently serves as the Academic Director of MBA Programs at the DeGroote School of Business, where he also teaches in the MBA and Executive Education programs.

Dr. Mamdouh Shoukri

Mamdouh Shoukri was the seventh President and Vice-Chancellor of York University, where he established the Lassonde School of Engineering. Dr. Shoukri currently serves on the Board of Directors of Canada Foundation for Innovation and Rainmaker Worldwide Inc., the Board of Governors of McMaster University, and the Advisory Council of the Canadian Civil Liberty Association.

Mr. Glen Crossley

Glen Crossley is the Associate Director of Business Development and Intellectual Property at McMaster University. Prior to that, he was Director of Product Engineering at Spheral Solar Power and Senior Engineer at E Ink. Mr. Crossley has a Master of Engineering Chemistry from Queen’s University.

Mr. Jonathan Skirving

Jonathan Skirving currently serves as the President of Blackbriar Consulting, a corporate and professional advisory firm, where he brings over 20 years of business and professional experience. As a bank leader, he arranged lending and equity financing for companies in the range of $1M-$100M+. Jonathan has an MBA from the DeGroote School of Business.

Mr. John Whelen

John Whelen is a retired corporate executive who spent most of his career in the pipeline and energy utility sector, primarily with Enbridge Inc. He currently sits on the Board of a public energy transition company and is active in the development of early-stage energy transition technology. Mr. Whelen has a MBA from McMaster University.

Mr. Stu Miller

Stu Miller is currently the Chief Legal Officer of ONxpress. Previously, he served as the General Counsel for a subsidiary of CalPERS and as Managing Director and General Counsel for Macquarie North America’s private equity and infrastructure management group. Mr. Miller was formerly a Partner with McCarthy Tetrault LLP.
